From The Johns Hopkins University, Mr. Steele earned his bachelor's degree in international relations in 1981, and from the Georgetown University Law Center, his law degree in 1991. He also attended the Augustinian Friars Seminary at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania, in preparation for the priesthood.
Mr. Steele has worked untiringly in the political arena since 1978. In December 2000, he was elected Chair of the Maryland State Republican Party, the first African American to be elected Republican State party chair in the United States. Mr. Steele also serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the Republican National Committee. From 1994-2000, he served as Chair of the Republican Central Committee for Prince George's County, Maryland, the first African American to hold that position. He was one of the front-runners for the office of Lieutenant Governor in 1998. Michael was also a candidate for Comptroller of Maryland in 1998. He has served as an advisor to campaigns of fellow politicians and has held membership in several political organizations: Prince George's County Maryland Black Republican Council (1992); Maryland State Republican Party Victory Campaigns; Treasurer/Advisor Michele Dyson for Congress (1994); Chair, Maryland State Minority Outreach Task Force (1995-1997); Alternate Delegate to the 1996 Republican Party National Convention, San Diego, California; Delegate to the 2000 Republican Party National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Honorary Co-Chair, Truth in Taxation Committee (1996); Chair, Term Limits Coalition (2000). In 1995, he was selected Maryland State Republican Man of the Year.
Mr. Steele’s community and national affiliations include his appointment by President George W. Bush in 2002 to the Board of Visitors of the United States Naval Academy. In 2001, he served on the National Commission on Federal Election Reform. Other affiliations include service on the NAACP’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Election Reform, the Board of Directors of The Hospice of the National Capital Area, and membership in the Knights of Columbus, the Prince George's County Chapter of the NAACP, and the Johns Hopkins Society of Black Alumni. He is a former member of the Board of Trustees of The Johns Hopkins University.
Currently, Mr. Steele hosts "Lunchtime with Maryland’s GOP", a radio program on WOLB (1010AM) in Baltimore. He also has appeared on numerous radio and television programs, including "Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher", "Metro Talk," "That Show With Those Black Guys," "The Joe Madison Show," "Extra," "Capitol Sunday" and "BET Tonight". In addition, he has written numerous columns and editorials for the Washington Times, the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, and the Journal Newspapers.
Mr. Steele is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Landover Hills, Maryland, which he attends with his wife, Andrea, and their two sons, Michael and Drew. In June 1998, Mr. Steele was honored by his Church community as Man of the Year.
